FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Indianapolis Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council accepting applications for the 2024-2025 school year

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (March 11, 2024) – Applications are now being accepted for the 2024-2025 cohort of the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council, a group of young people who help amplify youth voices and provide youth input and perspectives to Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. Applications for the council, which is a partnership between MCCOY (Marion County Commission on Youth) and the City of Indianapolis, with additional support from the Lilly Endowment, are open from now until April 14, 2024.

“The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council is a resource for students and leadership alike,” said Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. “It prepares young people for the roles they will one day assume while permitting officials like me an opportunity to learn from a younger generation’s unique experiences and concerns.”

The council, facilitated by MCCOY, serves two primary functions: to empower young people to become civically engaged and to build a sense of civic responsibility in them for the future; and to provide an advisory group to Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and city government that will keep city leaders connected to the issues of young citizens.

“The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council serves as a vital bridge between our city’s leadership and its youth residents,” said MCCOY Executive Director Liz Coit. “Through the Council, we are investing in our young people by developing their leadership skills, connecting them with opportunities to engage with city leaders, and ultimately giving them an opportunity to make a real impact in their communities.”

Participants will be required to:

  • Attend mandatory Saturday morning meetings once a month during the traditional school calendar Aug-May for leadership development and community building.
  • Participate in additional youth-led initiatives to impact the Indianapolis community.

Details on the application process:

  • Completed applications are due by 5:00pm on April 14, 2024.
  • Applicants may receive a request for a phone call screening prior to May 1.
  • Applicants will be notified if they are invited to interview by May 1 and will have 48 hours to respond and claim their interview spot.
  • All MYLC interviews will take place at the MCCOY office May 9 between 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM OR on the morning of May 11 between 9:00 AM  – 12:00 PM.
  • We plan to notify the 25 total members chosen for the MYLC 2024-2025 class by May 31.
  • Orientation for participants and parents will take place in August, time TBA.

This council is open to Indianapolis residents who are rising Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors in high school. This opportunity is not reserved only for high-achieving students or those in prominent leadership roles already; MCCOY and connected partners hope to find young people from all walks of life who have a passion for making positive change in the community. Interested students can apply here by April 14.
