Playworks, in collaboration with Community Outreach and Engagement at Indiana University Health will offer
two opportunities for staff from summer programs serving Marion County youth to participate in Playworks
Power of Play and Group Management trainings.
Power of Play – Morning Session:
Participants experience the Power of Play for themselves, while
learning to use games to support the physical, social, and
emotional development of children. Participants will learn:
● Ice Breakers – games to build community
● Group Games – to engage large groups of children
● Core Games – set up common games for inclusion and
easy conflict resolution
● Benefits of play – as well as barriers children face to play
and how to address them
● Next steps – best practices that can be implemented now
Group Management – Evening Session
Participants will learn the benefits of using proactive behavior
management strategies and how to integrate them into daily
routines. Group Management explores five key group
management strategies that adults can use to set children up for
successful group behavior including:
● Building Rapport – learn what rapport is and how to build
through play
● Attention Getters and Signals – and a variety of ways to
gain children’s attention
● Transitions, Openings, and Closings – practice effective
transitions and define where and when to use them
● Learning Styles – learn to use a variety of techniques and
systems that address each learning style
● Rules and Consequences—understand the importance of
consistent rules and consequences
Each organization is invited to participate in one training (either May 29 or June 7) and can send 3-5
members of their staff. Additionally, each organization will receive one Playworks equipment kit to help
implement the games and strategies learned during the trainings.
