Youth Champion: Peggy Esselman Campbell, Families First
- Why did you want to go into this line of work?
I was always drawn to this line of work, to helping others. My parents said to who much is given much is expected. I’ve had good role models, a great education and felt that I could share my experiences to help others parent better. Sharing my knowledge to help others is what I’ve been drawn to.
- What was your first day on the job like?
It was hectic, but I knew immediately that this was a place I could have an impact and work with families and individuals that needed these services. It was hectic and overwhelming exciting all at the same time.
- What is most rewarding about your job?
Having a conversation with a parent about a struggle they’re having and helping them to work through it. Connecting with them so that they know I have their best interests at heart, and using the connection to be able to work with them and help them.
- What is the most challenging part of your job?
Seeing children and kids who aren’t getting services they need, the attention or services needed from their parents, schools, communities. For whatever reason it’s difficult to see kids not getting help they need. When I see kids not getting taken care of it disappoints me. Kids need should come first.
- How has MCCOY helped your organization succeeded or grow?
Every year we get copies of the Youth Activity Directory and that is always a highlight because passing them out makes a difference. Families don’t have the resources or information found in the Youth Activity Directory. We’ve heard from people and families that the Youth Activity Directory is a big help to them.
- Where do you see yourself and your organization in five years?
I hope to still be advocating for children and families and making sure that their voices are heard. I want to make sure parents can do what they need to for their children. I want to continue this work whether I’m volunteering or continuing as a parent educator.
